GiantDisc Showcase

Violetta

by Martin

Martin has built his jukebox into a case of an old tube radio. There are more pictures in his gallery.

HiFi rack "Musikbox"

Reinhold Farsch

HiFi rack "Musikbox" based on an VIA Epia-M 10k with passive cooling using a heatpipe from AeroCool (VGA-Heatpipe VM-101). Lots of RAM + DVD-ROM. For air circulation there is an 80 mmm fan running at 7 volt, very silent. The case is from Cooler Master (Cavalier 2), "with famous Musketeer's Audio Sound Pressure device that its analog dial swings along with sound, just like legacy amplifiers ..." My wife likes it ;-) Controlled by a Palm IIIxe.
Very nice software.

Jukebox

Peter Schmieg

HiFi rack jukebox based on a Pentium 133 with 40GB Harddisk, running SuSE Linux 8.0. Selfmade wood case with brushed aluminum front panel. The LC-Display is dismantled from a used telephone. The box is controlled by a Palm IIIe.

Running RedHat Linux 7.1

Controlled by a Sony Clie 320

Home Stereo

by Bob Hauck

The system is a Dell Optiplex GX1 (Pentium 200, 64 MB RAM) with the hard drive upgraded to 40 GB. The OS is Debian 3.0 (woody). The controller is a Palm M100 modified with rechargeable batteries and connected via a custom cable that charges them from the PC. The stereo is my existing mongrel setup based on a Kenwood 150 watt/channel amplifier and Bose speakers.

As you can see, my daughter (now 11 years old) is a big fan of Giantdisc!

I just got giantdisc working, and it's really great!! Thank you for an excellent program!

Kjetil Rensel, Norway, Jul '02

I've been using GD since version 0.96 and now it's time to contribute. [...] I extended gdmakelinks.pl to build two additional browse directories: full names and albums.

This makes it more easy to access the files from a networked machine. In addition to the GD server which is hooked to an amplifier in the kitchen, I like to access the files from the bedroom with a windows laptop and some active speakers.

Finally, thank you for providing this great piece of software.

Olav Wölfelschneider, May '02

This is so cool.

Bart Stassen, Feb '02

Thank you so much for your www site and great software! I have configured an old Pentium 200MMX as my digital audio server using your GiantDisc software and instructions. I control it from my Palm Vx.

I use the digital output on my SoundBlaster Live Platinum to connect straight into my Sony receiver using digital coax. It sounds great!

I'm not a Linux guru (at all!) but I found your instructions very easy to follow. Not yet able to get the web server working... but I ll keep trying.

Thanks again and keep up the excellent work.

GiantDisc is a fantastic piece of software. Right now I have it running on RH 7.2, on a Pentium 120, with 32Mb of RAM.

Zach Maillard, Jan '02

Thanks for some absolutely wonderful software... you've done a marvelous job with it. As you can probably tell, I'm thoroughly impressed!

[...] the machine is running on RH6.1, as I couldn't find my 7.1 CDs at the time of installation. Other than the initial hiccups, the machine runs perfectly.

Angus Griffin, Jan '02

My compliments for the GiantDisc software! I'm using it with a PalmPilot Pro and it really works great.

Jeroen de Zoeten, Jan '02

I set up a Giantdisc jukebox a couple of months ago. It is in a low-profile desktop case so it fits in with the stereo system. The family _loves_ it! Even the 10-year-old has figured out how to run it. Thanks for making the software available.

Bob Hauck, Nov '01

Simply brilliant, man!

Chris Gross, Nov '01

GiantDisc is GREAT! It's the best mp3 server software I've ever used. Interfacing it with a Palm device is a brilliant idea.

Tony Collins, Jul '01

Having fun installing your software on my pentium 133 box which is spare here! I got it to work no problems.

Graeme, Apr '01

I finally got v 0.94 up and running [...] This is one of the coolest pieces of software I've seen for a Linux box and it gets better each time you revise it.

Tom Fine, Jan '01

I've been playing with GiantDisc (0.93) a bit and I really like the idea. It puts together a number of ideas I've had regarding using the Palm as a MP3 player frontend to a Linux server.
