Showcase: Jukebox III

My third jukebox

The VIA-Eden board (800Mhz VIA Eden ESP processor core) is a highly integrated Pentium compatible PC board with a small footprint of 17x17cm (Mini-ITX form factor). It contains everything that is necessary for a networked jukebox. It has digital audio out, ethernet and many more useful peripherals and interfaces on board. One more nice feature is the low power consumption.

The 120GB harddisk Maxtor DiamondMax D540X runs at 5400 rpm. This makes it extremely silent. All in all, with the noise reduction measures mentioned below, the jukebox is extremley silent. It doesn't disturb at all in a silent living room.

The processor fan is quite noisy. However, when it is operated at 7-8V you can't hear it anymore in a closed case. There's on additional ultra low noise fan that replaces the power supply fan. The case of the low profile ATX power supply has been removed and replaced by a aluminum trellis.

This jukebox can play and record CDs with it's integrated DVD-ROM drive. But it remains permanently attached to the local network in order to have internet access and to synchronize its content with my mobile GiantDisc server.

The case has been taken from a used home video player.

The system runs GNU/Linux RedHat 7.3.
